Common Tryout FAQs:
How long are the tryouts?
The tryouts will be approximately 2 hours long depending on the number of participants within the age group. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the start time to allow for registration, stretching and warm-up. We will have a short 1-page registration to complete prior to tryouts.
How what should I wear and bring?
Prepare as you would a game. Bring your 'A' game. Be prepared to hit, run, slide, pitch, etc. We will want to look at all parts of your game. Bring all your gear and plenty of liquids (ie: glove, sneakers, cleats, batting gloves, helmet, bat, and own water container). Catchers must bring their own catching equipment! Please label each piece of your equipment. The Firestorm are not responsible for lost equipment. Be aware, each athlete will have a limited number of swings, ground/fly balls, etc. Therefore, every drill/skill you perform should be taken seriously and done to the best of your ability.
What should I expect during tryouts?
It will vary a little by age but our coaches will want to take a look at your speed, hitting, throwing, and fielding abilities. Some of the stations you will work out on are:
- Hitting - We will have you hit approximately 10 pitches. We will also look for your bat speed and hand quickness. Older players may be asked to hit off live pitchers.
- Fielding - Everyone will be asked to take infield and outfield. Our coaches would like to see how you judge fly balls, foot work, and throwing to first base.
- Throwing - Outfielders will be looked at to see their arm strength. We will see how they recognize the cutoff and hit the cutoff for the relay. Infielders will be looked at to see their agility, strength, and situational recognition.
- Pitching – Pitchers will be asked to throw to catchers in a controlled manner. Our coaches will look for speed, accuracy, and ball movement. Strikes and hitting the target are key.
- Catching – We will ask catchers to throw to all bases. Our coaches will be looking for arm strength, footwork, and quickness.
- Base Running - We will time everyone from home - first, home-second, and second-home. We will ask you to slide and run thru first base as you would when beating out a groundball.
- Game Knowledge - Make sure you engage and talk to the coaches. They want to get to know you as a player and person. We believe in more than teaching softball but training well-rounded athletes.
When and how will we know if our daughter makes the team?
Coaches will contact parents after all scheduled tryouts are complete. If you have only attended one tryout, you might be asked to join for an additional day if they were not already scheduled. If a coach is unsure, they may contact you for an additional workout.
We would like to know if our offer is accepted within one week of being extended the offer. An active email address will be critical for point of contact for the official offer. We understand that you may be weighing other organizations, but please keep in mind there are multiple players that are interested in joining the organization. While we would love for you to be a member of the Firestorm, please be courteous if your decision has changed.
We wish everyone the best of luck! If you ever have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the team’s coach or ask anyone on tryout day.
